The KNTU’s Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (
KSEEL
) was formally established in 2007. The KSEEL is available to all researchers, professionals and clients from industry to solve basic and applied problems in structural engineering.
The Laboratory is located at the ground floor of the CE faculty of KNTU campus, the Laboratory houses equipment for studying the behavior of structural elements and systems both on scale models and prototypes. Studies range from detailed stress analyses to both static and dynamic tests on structural systems.
Today, about 20 doctoral and masters students are engaged in research projects under the Lab’s umbrella.
Testing capabilities
At the KSEEL, one can conduct conventional tests using the Lab’s large strong floor, reaction frames and variety of actuators and modern instrumentation devices and sensors. The facility is capable of inducing forces from low to very high ranges. The deformations can be measured from a few hundredth of a millimeter to tens of Centimeters.
Testing capabilities include modern techniques for hybrid simulation methods (Virtual Hybrid Simulation and Real-Time Hybrid Simulation) that combines physical and analytical sub-structures into a hybrid model of the entire structure using a medium scale state of the art actuator, the Open-source Framework for Experimental Setup and control (OpenFresco), the latest finite element models built using the Open System for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (OpenSees) framework can be carried out.
The KSEEL also has the capacity to conduct a nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring of the structural components and systems. Methods investigated include: Vibrational Testing and several strain/stress measurement techniques.
The Laboratory includes a 100m
2
Steel strong floors. Two Steel reaction frame, actuators and specimens are securely fastened during the test. A 10-ton 3-Dimensional bridge crane can carry test specimens up to 10 m in height.
The Laboratory has following capabilities in brief:
·
4
Hydraulic Actuator
with a reconfigurable assemblies with advanced control system (Quiri)
·
A High performance
Hydraulic Power Supply
with flow exceeding??? liters per minute
·
3

capabilities
Staff
Laboratory staff members are able to design and create specialized test fixtures,
complex and large test setups
,
and a variety of detailed instrumentation networks. They are able to fabricate complex test specimens for structural components and systems made of steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, wood and other materials. Instrumentation available in the laboratory ranges from simple mechanical indicators to a high speed computer-controlled data acquisition systems.
